I cannot get enough of the Gatekeeper Quilt. It takes on a different personality with each version I make. This is my 4th Gatekeeper. I just keep coming back. It’s construction is made up of squares and rectangles only. Add strip piecing to boot… It’s an oldie, but goodie. Here is the Nautical Blues version of Gatekeeper.
I wanted to make this version of Gatekeeper using all shades of blues. I already had these shades of blue in my stash from the Lakeside Sampler Quilt. I thought if I added the navy blue stripe, both in the quilt AND in the binding, I’d come up with a version of this quilt that would coordinate perfectly with Lakeside Sampler. I’m in love with this nautical combo and can’t wait to take them both to the lake this summer!
I took a picture of each block used in this quilt. When you put them all together, it looks so much more complex than it really is. Those 3 simple “all-squares” blocks above combine to make the gorgeous quilt below. This is one of my only advanced beginner patterns. It simply doesn’t need fancy piecing - just a great color combo.
This quilt goes together quickly with strip piecing. It helps to assemble the blocks faster than making them one at a time. My son was requesting a quilt with a minky back and claimed this quilt top early on. For him, I chose the backing. This navy blue minky in 90” wide looks so regal and rich against the white and blue mix on the front. The striped binding adds an extra pop.
Estill at Red Rooster Quilts taught me how to use the ProStitcher at the shop. I have done a little free motion quilting on a long arm, probably ten years ago. It was a new experience to use the computerized quilting on a long arm. There’s so much to know! But I really enjoyed being a part of this quilt coming to life. I think the bubbles and swirls pattern of quilting perfectly suits the solids and straight lines of the squares and rectangles on the front. Makes me think of lapping waves. It really shows up on that minky back too.
Anyone ready for summer yet? Can you tell I am ready for some lake time? Working on the nautical blues quilt reminds is good motivation to get through the cold winter…
I’ve made this quilt up into kits. I will have a limited number available - so grab one if you like!
I absolutely love that these 2 quilts coordinate. The Lakeside Sampler is super colorful and very graphic. I think the nautical blues version of Gatekeeper shows off the same shades of Kona blues in a much more sophisticated way. Hmm…. should I keep adding on to this theme? That’s one I’m going to think on!
