My new book Hoop Quilts for Beginners looks at mini quilts with a slightly different eye. Break out of the BLOCK!
Quick, inexpensive, different, ROUND and super fun.
What are Hoop Quilts?
Most mini quilts are exactly like their name. A miniature version of a quilt. Small sized, usually less than 36”, traditionally bound, and intended more for display than use. Hoop Quilts are a round spin on mini quilts. Sew up some patchwork, using just one quilt block, embroider or embellish, and frame it with a hoop for display. They are fun small projects to make, gift and swap.
QUICK MAKE When full size quilts often take weeks or months to complete, Hoop Quilts offer a relatively “quick” project made using just one quilt block. Hoop Quilts make a fantastic choice for weekend workshops or quilt shop classes.
INEXPENSIVE Learning how to sew? Hoop Quilts can be made with pre-cut charm packs and less than 1 1/2 yards of a few other fabrics. Got scraps? Hoop Quilts are perfect for using of those scrap bins due to the small amount of fabric required. Wooden hoops are between $3-$12, depending on size (in 2022), and embroidery flosses are around 50 cents each.
DIFFERENT Hoop Quilts use a combination of needle arts… include as much patchwork, embroidery or embellishments as you like. Try a new skill or technique without fear with a small scale project.
ROUND I show you all the details on creating a round patchwork border and wrapping a hoop in binding to finish the Hoop Quilt with flair. The clasp and/or block at the top of the Hoop Quilt is ready for hanging.
UNIQUE Use these projects as a chance to learn a little something, work with your hands, explore color and texture, weave needle and thread, and add your own creative details. No two Hoop Quilts will turn out the same. It’s a very different and unique piece for you to keep or gift as you like.
Hoop Quilts are sweet round minis, made with love and a little spunk. And they want to be displayed pretty much anywhere you can possibly think of. Sewing room? Yes please. Bedrooms? For sure. Tiny hallway? Absolutely! Hoop Quilts fit perfectly in just about any space. Several sizes for each design are offered in the book.
