Here we are at August and Block #8. It’s hard to imagine needing mittens right now, as the heat is blazing here in the late summer. But let’s do out best to get in the hygge mood this month. We are sewing 3 Mitten blocks. When I think of fall and winter, I love how knitted hats and mittens have become not just items to be used in cold weather, but also a fashion statement that completes a cozy look. Do you reserve mittens and a beanie for only days when it snows? Or are they regular wears in winter months? I’m always cold, so they are a cool weather staple for me.

Here is Block #8 Mittens from the Hygge Sampler Quilt Pattern. The mitten blocks feature some quick stitch-n-flip units for the main body. Then we try our hand at FPP or Foundation Paper Piecing for the thumb section of the block. I tried to keep this section pretty simple - but with enough pieces to portray the mitten section. I am not a very good paper piecer, and it’s a skill I should spend more time working on. These 3 blocks were enough for me for this quilt! lol
Since I am definitely not a paper piecing expert, I have referred to a real pro to talk you through the FPP part of this block. Mary Fons gives a demonstration in 2 parts that is extremely helpful if FPP is new to you. As with anything new, take it slow and make a practice block….. or make sure you have enough fabric for an extra block *just in case*….
Remember to check the scaling on your template before you begin sewing and set the stitch length to 1.0!
