Meet the Rutilant Quilt Pattern! Rutilant is a quick and easy scrappy layer cake friendly quilt pattern. Rutilant is an advanced beginner pattern and you can make a throw using a combo of layer cake squares and fat eighths. Or go completely scrappy. Your choice.
This scrap friendly free quilt pattern is in my pattern shop. Wait. Hold up. Did I say free? Yes! This is a FREE quilt pattern. A gift for you! Go…. and bring forth the scrap bins.
This quilt pattern is based off a little part of the Patchwork Auditions quilt. Patchwork Auditions is a quilt along I hosted that focuses on color placement in quilt blocks. I experimented with six different quilt blocks, changing colors and backgrounds to challenge our thinking. We get used to seeing quilt blocks colored a certain way and forget the explore variations. That project was entirely about Playing - Exploring - Enjoying fabrics and fun.
The Economy Block was the 4th block used in the quilt along and it’s one of my favorites.
I had a number of scraps and family friends that needed a quilt hug, so I began making 12” economy blocks for a scrappy quilt for them. I sewed 12 blocks, added some sashing and a border. It’s a great scrappy quilt and I thought I’d write up a little free pattern just for you.

When I finished this quilt in the fall, it looked absolutely rutilant set amongst the fall leaves in all their glory. Rutilant became the quilt’s name naturally. Although it uses many colors in it’s palette, I am always drawn to the reds and oranges. Rutilant specifically evokes images of glowing red or golden… But this quilt feels picnic-y too with the gingham backing and binding. :)
