The Hygge Sampler Quilt Pattern just released, and today, I'm sharing with you how to select fabric for this quilt. This quilt is both modern + traditional in design, using traditional piecing, applique, templates and basic foundation paper piecing. It’s an intermediate pattern because of all those techniques we use to make the blocks. But don’t be afraid! My patterns are very detailed, and go step-by-step. In most cases, I have video tutorials to help you learn along the way. Will you give it a go and make your coziest quilt yet?
To think about choosing fabric, let’s take a look at the back cover of the pattern with the fabric requirements….
FLANNEL FABRIC I am excited to show you this pattern in these lush and cozy flannels. I have used a variety of flannels from both Robert Kaufman Fabrics and Riley Blake Fabrics. I chose to use a Shetland Flannel, a Mammoth Flannel, a solid flannel, gingham flannels, and several blenders. It creates a good mix of textures. I talk about fabric selections for the quilt top in detail below.
It all starts with the Focus Fabric.
CHOOSE 1 FOCUS FABRIC + 6 COORDINATES
The Hygge Sampler is based on choosing 7 fabrics. Now, they don’t have to be flannel. That was my choice to add more warmth and coziness to this quilt. If you choose flannels, they are a bit fidgety to work with. They work best when piecing is larger. So this quilt pattern has larger piecing (Except #1 Steaming Mug) than you would normally see in my patterns.
FOCUS FABRIC Your focus fabric should either be plaid or a multi-color print. This will be your busiest fabric in the stack. You want this fabric to have at least 3 colors you can pull out for coordinates.
COORDINATES Choose 3 colors from your Focus Fabric. For each of your 3 colors, you will need to choose a light and dark shade. One of these will be your background fabric (Fabric A above) also. So think about what fabric you want to be there in the background.
My 3 coordinate colors are: Pink, Aqua, and Cocoa. Now go back up and look at my fabric selection photo. You can see A) dark pink B) light pink C) light aqua D) dark aqua E) light cocoa F) dark cocoa G) Focus Fabric Plaid. Not all the fabrics have to be perfectly matchy-matchy. Using this selection concept will help you achieve a look very similar to the sample. Making the block-work pop is all about fabric selection!
When choosing fabrics, I suggest choosing either tone-on-tone, tone-and-white small prints, solids or blenders for your coordinating prints. Hygge embraces warm cozy tones, but choose to your liking.
FABRIC CHART Most of my patterns include a Fabric Chart for you to cut out swatches and paste them to this page. THIS PAGE IS CRUCIAL!!! Please take the time to make this “cheat sheet” for yourself at the beginning of making this pattern. Keep it with you for reference whenever you are cutting. All cutting instructions will tell you to CUT (X) squares from Fabric B and (X) rectangles from Fabric C, etc. It is very easy to get confused when you are translating a pattern to your own color palette. This fabric chart makes it SO EASY!
EXAMPLE COLOR WAYS ABOVE: Here are 4 sketches of alternate color ways. Most of them are using flannels and plaids. But I also wanted to show what this pattern would look like using florals for a different look.
Top Left: Mammoth Flannel in Americana, Shetland Flannel in Red Houndstooth, Shetland Flannel in Indigo, Shetland Flannel in Russet, RK Flannel Solid in Bison
Top Right: Mammoth Junior Flannel in Dove, Flannel Solid in Dolphin and Charcoal, Shetland Flannel in Jet, Cozy Cotton Flannel in Grey,
Bottom Left: Mammoth Organic Flannel in Seaglass, Shetland Flannel in Basil (background), Shetland Flannel in Jet, Flannel Solid in Natural and Dolphin
Bottom Right: Spirited collection by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery Fabrics. AGF has a lot of soothing and calming color palettes, many with Bohemian style. I think this Spirited collection would look great in this pattern.
I hope this helps kick off your hygge quilt! Using these fabric selection tips should make the art of choosing easier. Pick up your copy of the Hygge Sampler and get started on your cuddle journey!
