It’s not often I go for a queen size quilt, but this finish is just for my bedroom. It was time to go big or go home! I started working on this quilt in 2019. It’s been finished and living on my bed for quite a while, but I never put pictures up here. The last queen quilt I made for my own bed was about 10 years old, so I decided we needed a refresh in the master bedroom.
This line, called Winter Shimmer by Jennifer Sampou, came out in Spring 2019, and I knew right away it was perfect for my freshly painted bedroom. The soft palette and shimmer texture was just what I wanted for creating a peaceful and relaxing room. I also added in a little Essex Linen Metallic for some extra bling.
Cutting out the equilateral triangles went pretty well. I bought a Creative Grids 12” 60degree Equilateral Triangle Ruler to cut out the triangles. I cut 10 1/2” strips to yield 10” finished triangles.
I love to read before turning in for the night, and cuddling up under a quilt and matching pillowcases was a must. My husband and I have been married 18 years, and decorating the master had always seemed to fall last on the list. Not anymore. :)
This quilt went together pretty quickly. I laid out each row before sewing to achieve a “random” but controlled look. Each row has 17 equilateral triangles and 2 half triangles at either end. With 10 rows, the finished quilt is 91” x 101”. It’s a tad bigger than queen, but I wanted a fair amount of drape over the sides. Even when I added extra rows to make it longer and wider, it still shrank a little too much when I washed it. Dang it!
Kathy at Quilty Pleasures quilted this for me. I love the pattern that almost looks like spiky ferns. It’s a botanical edge-to-edge design. The Winter Shimmer prints have a lot of snowflakes on the prints, but I wanted the quilting design to be more neutral so I could use this quilt all year round.
